Worcester Ice Center – Worcester, MA

Sports & Recreation

Services: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering

The Worcester Ice Center, home of the Worcester Railers Ice Hockey Team, was part of a major downtown redevelopment effort.  This 100,000 sq. ft. sports facility is anchored with two modern ice hockey rinks, 27,000 sq. ft. of retail space. It offers 166 parking spaces including two satellite parking lots. Permitting included site plan review and a site plan amendment due to building design changes.  The arena takes advantage of it’s high visibility from 290 and popular downtown.  Brick architectural elements were used to match the existing buildings.  Brick stamped crosswalks connect the arena to adjacent parking areas.  Pedestrian access was thought of to connect to the downtown.  A retaining wall was used to keep the site level and elevate the parcel from Harding Street, and a pedestrian stairway connects the site to the sidewalk.  A row of Cherry Trees line the parking lot and will be visible from the highway in the Spring.  Other landscape elements include Dogwood, Crabapple Trees, Rising Sun Redbud Trees, Evergreen White Fir and many shrubs and perennials.  Artwork covers one side of the arena and a Pizza restaurant is also part of the development.
