Boston Sports Institute, the long-awaited indoor sports facility in Wellesley, MA, has been completed.  This 130,000 SF public-private partnership boasts a swimming pool, two ice rinks, a turf field, an indoor track, strength, conditioning and physical therapy space, an arcade, pro shop and concession stand.

Allen & Major Associates, Inc. (A&M) partnered with Edge Sports Group (ESG) and the Town of Wellesley to provided site engineering, land survey and landscape architectural services for the project.

The extensive landscape design was planned carefully with the site’s mature trees in mind.  Before the design could begin, A&M’s landscape architects walked the entire site and tagged and surveyed all of the mature trees in the woods at the rear of the property.  This tree inventory helped calculate how many trees would need to be planted in the new parking lot.  The trees in the rear of the property were preserved, but the new design incorporated 32% open space and many newly planted trees.

A&M worked with the Town of Wellesley Conservation Commission and a wildlife biologist, to incorporate as many native species of plants into the design to support pollinators and wildlife.  At the entrance to the site, you can see an example of this with the Pagoda Dogwood which was planted in lieu of the more commonly used Kousa Dogwood. There is also a wetland replication that sits around existing trees and biofiltration under the parking field.  The idea was to upgrade the habitat area by adding some hummocks and hollows (hills and low areas) and vegetation to increase the area’s biodiversity.
